Right, so I'm still feeling a bit secretive about the location for Issue (05) considering that Issue (04) isn't even out yet - that's tomorrow... but I will say that it's somewhere in Asia. Anyway, I assumed that all of Asia used 220V power like all of Europe, but then I found that some don't, and the place I'm going is 110V. It's a problem.

I do love natural light (and all things natural), but when shooting in a guy's home at night, I do use strobes and external flash, either for fill light or in a very hard and obvious way. But my equipment won't work on 110V systems. So do I spend too much money buying a new light when I get there or is there a workaround?
I contacted Barry Marré, a brilliant photographer who pretty much only uses natural light and asked what he would do. He said to try shooting in ISO 3200 with just the room lights. Sounds simple enough, but such a high ISO means very grainy images. This is actually something I like but my worry is whether Elska readers would be perturbed by the extreme grittiness. There can also be a bit of blur too, something I've grown to enjoy sometimes, caused by needing to keep my shutter speed pretty slow too.
So there was nothing else for it - I needed to run some experiments. I contacted Peter D, a French expat and emerging drag queen (his drag name is Coco Vin!). He lives just up the road from me in London so I popped over, cranked up the ISO and did some tests. And here's some of what we came up with. More tests to come.
